So, here are some apps that will let you play exactly what you want to listen to, and what’s best — most of them are free!

Spotify. You can search for any artist, track or album, and listen for free with ads, or get Spotify Premium to skip the ads. Spotify is a great way to listen to music on a tablet or mobile device.

Songza. This streaming service plays original playlists created by music experts. You can browse a curated playlist library by activity, genre, decade or mood. The playlists are ultra specific, so whatever you’re doing, you have a synchronized soundtrack accompanying you.

8tracks. If you’re into indie, EDM, Canadian or dubstep music, this ad-free music streaming app is for you. With two million free playlists curated by music fiends just like you, even with zillions of miles under your belt, you won’t run out of tunes.

iHeartRadio. This service gives you a world of music and radio in one simple app. You can listen to top radio stations, news, music, talk radio, comedy shows, sports or podcasts from all over North America. My Favorites Radio gives you all the music you like, and you can keep up with sports games like football, baseball, basketball, and hockey, or catch your favourite talk shows with stations like ESPN, Fox Sports, and Kentucky Sports Radio.

Shazam. Apparently, 100 million people use this app every month! Use Shazam to identify music, get song lyrics, and even make discoveries of new music made by artists you like, or check out what they like to listen to. To skip ads, you can upgrade to Shazam Encore.

AOL Radio. With AOL Radio you can stream as much music as you want. Get hundreds of free music stations created by music experts, including oldies and rock, pop, country, hip-hop, indie, R&B, classical, jazz, electronic/dance, and jazz. News and sports programming are provided by ABC News and ESPN Radio.

Discovr. If cash flow is not a problem for you, consider shelling about $5 per month for Discovr, the number one music app in the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, and across Europe. The Wall Street Journal calls this app “Beautiful and dynamic.” Discovr is all about the music you love — songs, artists, videos, and more, and has also been featured in many tech and music magazines. It has all your favorite artists and bands from all kinds of genres, like hip hop, indie, pop, dance, country, metal, world, folk and classical. With access to 15 million songs, you’ll never run out of tunes to keep you company on the road.
